Cartmel & District Reserves Winners Junior Cup 2019
Westmorland CFA Junior Cup Final
After a gruelling Junior Cup run which included three extra time and penalty kick games Penrith Royal fell at the last hurdle after losing 3-2 in the final to Cartmel & District Reserves at Parkside Road, Kendal on Wednesday 10 April 2019
Cartmel who play in the North Lancashire League started as favourites for the game however Penrith Royal from Westmorland League Division Three proved to be tough opposition in an action packed final.
Cartmel shaded the opening stages with better finishing and could have taken an early lead, however Royal began to gradually get a foothold in the game and began to look dangerous themselves with Alex Jackson and Craig Willan testing Cowperthwaite in goal and Jamie Armstrong missing the upright by a couple of inches.
However Cartmel opened the scoring after 19 minutes when a cross into the bob by Morgan Dennison ended up in the back of the net.
Joel Drinkall and Nathan Bushell created glorious opportunities for Cartmel who dominated the remainder of the first half, while Penriths defence stood firm.
Jamie Armstrong edged Penrith in front seven minutes in the second half after catching Cowperthwaite off his line and finished by curling the ball into the net from 30 yards.
However Cartmel equalised in the last 20 minutes after a speculative long ball fell to the feet of Ryan McKenny who went clean through on goal before finishing over the keeper.
Penrith began to tire, before Cartmel edged in front on 80 minutes when Alasdair Daggatt bundled the ball into the net from 2 yards.
Royal pushed for the equaliser with Lewis Renvoize going close for the Westmorland League Division three team, however Cartmel saw the closing stages out to secure victory.
